Kamfers Dam
Kamfers Dam is a large (400 ha) perennial wetland located on the northern outskirts of Kimberley, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. This wetland was previously an ephemeral pan, but it now receives additional water from the city (storm water runoff, and treated and untreated sewage water).
Kamfers Dam supports an important population of Lesser Flamingos and many other waterbird species. Kamfers Dam is registered as a Natural Heritage Site by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism and an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International, mainly because of its large flamingo population and the presence of other endemic and threatened waterbirds.
Kamfers Dam and its flamingos are threatened by various factors, but in particular deteriorating water quality and inappropriate developments (including housing developments), which will exacerbate the already critical water quality problem.
